The FAA has designated numerous different pilot ratings. These include recreational, sport, private pilot, commercial pilot, airline transport pilot and jet type-specific ratings . All jet powered aircraft and all aircraft over 12,500 lbs are type certified. A pilot must be type-rated to act as pilot-in-command in that same type aircraft. A type-rated pilot is allowed to fly any model aircraft with that same type rating.
In order to achieve these ratings a person must attend ground school and learn the required information. He must also undergo flight training to demonstrate proficiency in the required flight maneuvers, although a flight simulator can be substituted for some of this training. Upon satisfatory completion of these requirements, a certified flight instructor will sign-off on the training, which then allows a student to take an oral exam on the knowledge portion and then a flight test with an FAA designated examiner. The requirements vary by rating and are outlined in the official FAA Pratical Test Standards booklet.
